Someone please tell me why we have fingernails and toenails?

I don't see why we have them. If we didin't have them then we wouldn't have to cut them so much. Plus they don't do that much for us anyways. there really isn't a topic for this but try and bear with me.Someone please tell me why we have fingernails and toenails?
We have nails so that we can protect the tips of our digits. Furtermore, they allow us to scratch and pick up small things.

Without them we lose a profession (nail care) and make CSI people work harder!!Someone please tell me why we have fingernails and toenails?
Evolution, my friend. You know how animals have claws? Well, what are humans but more complex animals? This is the same reason we have canine teeth (the fang-looking ones). When we were first evolving, we needed carnivorous teeth and claws to catch and eat prey. Our teeth became less sharp, our claws became dull nails, and we walk upright no due to the fact that we don't need to do that stuff anymore.
maybe way back in time in our evoultion when we were still animals they might have been something like those on a dog. and through progress they come to be fingernails, they sure are nice when u need to pick something up or get that itch...

don't take this serious it all speculation...........
Their part of the integumentary system. They help prevent our body from infection and protect the nerves on the top of the ends of our fingertips/toes.
if we didnt have fingernails we wouldnt be able to pick anything up =/. and if we didnt have toenails we wouldnt be able to walk. so ya don't cut them off, that wouldnt be good at all.
years ago we grew them long and used them for many things

like climbing,protection,scratching ect ect
