there are one of two reasons that they are black, either fungal or age. Fungal, she needs to go see a doctor and they can give her a prescription if they are that black that is the only thing that can help, and with age....there is nothing she can do but hide it. Introduce her to some nail polish! That would be something that you could do together, yet still not be embarrassed of her nails in public!
There is a build up of bacteria under the nail, try calcuim pills, or cutting the nail really sort so you can scrape out as much as possible...
she can also soak them in hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. if it's really serious, then she should see a podiatrist.
